2007-11-30:

[0:11] <zenpsycho> it's me doing something horribly wrong...
[0:11] <zenpsycho> hum..
[0:35] <zenpsycho> no the real problem is the dreaded error retrieving node ids
[0:40] <zenpsycho> why is it doing this error- only when the local db column exists- if I write gibberish, no error
[0:43] <zenpsycho> wh .blah
[0:43] <zenpsycho> I gotta put it in quotes
[0:44] <zenpsycho> quotey quote!! I hope it's sanitising that before it gets sent to the sql server..
[1:05] <zenpsycho> or..not?
[1:05] <zenpsycho> it would seem that what happens when I put in quotes is the localdb access varialbe name is streated as a string, ie not replaced with local value
[1:08] <zenpsycho> I really am making a lot of mistakes today. I've learned my lesson about sleep deprivation
[1:16] <zenpsycho> I think i've worked it out myself thanks to logSql
[4:21] <zenpsycho> Hello
[4:29] <zenpsycho> philmaker! how are you going with your helma learnings?
[4:30] <philmaker> hi
[4:30] <philmaker> pretty good - for the past couple of days I've been working on setting up my personal site - I have Gobi running there: philmaker.com
[4:31] <philmaker> One of my goals to to help write some examples for Helma
[4:31] <zenpsycho> Helma is a tricky thing to wrap one's head around
[4:32] <philmaker> Who are you zenpsycho?
[4:32] <zenpsycho> I . oh whoops.
[4:32] <philmaker> hullo
[4:32] <bslivka> Hi
[4:33] <bslivka> You may know me as bslivka
[4:33] <bslivka> the b stands for breton
[4:33] <bslivka> the slivka stands for totally awesome
[4:33] <philmaker> hehe lol
[4:33] <philmaker> I have a pretty good grasp of most stuff - I've been asking some off the wall questions because of a certain task I was interested in.
[4:34] <philmaker> But example: if one wanted to mount a HopObject onto root - that basic step was hard to find
[4:34] <bslivka> I have been trying to do something kind of unusual, and finding helma keeps getting in the way in certain spots
[4:34] <philmaker> mountpoint() in type.properties
[4:35] <bslivka> the documentation for helma is painfully bad
[4:35] <bslivka> Especially for the .properties files
[4:35] <bslivka> everything is "This is the kind of thing you can do with this feature"
[4:35] <bslivka> but no thorough treatment
[4:35] <philmaker> I think the documentation needs more "statements of fact"
[4:36] <philmaker> and perhaps a little less explanation
[4:36] <philmaker> just my take
[4:36] <philmaker> I hope to be able to help write "Helma in a nutshell"
[4:36] <bslivka> I think a lot of it is that a lot of the people that use helma are familiar with its source code
[4:37] <philmaker> yeah - I understand - probably so
[4:37] <bslivka> so they don't necessarily notice the stuff that's missing from the documentation
[4:37] <philmaker> I like Helma and I like the idea of Javascript on the server side.
[4:37] <philmaker> I have been doing Java and Java Swing work recently.
[4:37] <bslivka> I quite like helma too- It's a shame that it doesn't use more JSON though
[4:38] <bslivka> instead of these java properties files, and xml files
[4:38] <philmaker> But I'm beginning to dive in to frameworks such as ExtJS, etc and I want to do JS on the server side.
[4:38] <bslivka> everything in the same language
[4:38] <philmaker> Also using JS and Helma and very nice - having no compile cycle. woot
[4:38] <bslivka> It's neat being able to change code on a running application
[4:38] <philmaker> re: more JSON though (righto) - like CouchDB is)
[4:39] <bslivka> though I guess if the built in DB was json the handy xslt sheet setup wouldn't be possible
[4:39] <bslivka> or would be more difficult
[4:40] <philmaker> which xslt sheet?
[4:41] <philmaker> Do you have a site or blog? I don't really have much atm but I'm working on it.
[4:42] <philmaker> I started adding some random notes to my workspace area on Helma.org and in my own wiki but so far haven't yet really written anything USEFUL
[4:42] <bslivka> I do have a blog
[4:42] <bslivka> It is generally incomprehensible to most of the people I've shown it to, though
[4:43] <bslivka> But I still write in it occasionally just to get my own thoughts and ideas out
[4:43] <philmaker> no judgements from me - just curious
[4:43] <bslivka> it's at httP://bustingseams.blogspot.com, if you're willing to brave it
[4:43] <philmaker> I wrote an entry on my blog once about frozen dinners - I'm so lame.
[4:44] <philmaker> Immediately looks cool to me. I blogged a few entiries once at wordpress but they were dumb.
[4:45] <philmaker> I need to write more tech articles - thinking about doing that for Helma and ExtJS, and so on.
[4:45] <bslivka> I think that blogging works best when you don't expect anyone to read it.
[4:45] <philmaker> :-)
[4:45] <philmaker> This time I am going with a wiki instead of blogging
[4:46] <philmaker> blogging is too chronological for me. :-)
[4:46] <philmaker> too unstructured I think
[4:46] <philmaker> maybe I want a wikiblog
[4:47] <philmaker> where do you reside bslivka?
[4:47] <philmaker> I am in Austin, Texas, USA
[4:47] <bslivka> Melbourne Australia
[4:47] <philmaker> I am not an imperialist
[4:47] <bslivka> Haha
[4:48] <philmaker> lol
[4:48] <bslivka> though I'm originally from Denver, Colorado
[4:48] <philmaker> cool
[4:48] <bslivka> I don't have an ozzie accent :(
[4:48] <philmaker> :-)
[4:48] <philmaker> Isn't Atlassian in Australia?
[4:49] <philmaker> e.g. confluence?
[4:49] <bslivka> Never heard of it...
[4:49] <philmaker> Confluence looks really sharp to me
[4:49] <bslivka> maybe?
[4:49] <bslivka> what is it?
[4:49] <philmaker> http://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence/
[4:50] <philmaker> Sydney
[4:50] <philmaker> http://www.atlassian.com/about/contact.jsp
[4:52] <bslivka> There's a lot of fancy tech companies in australia, I've noticed
[4:52] <bslivka> videogame developers too
[4:52] <bslivka> One really nice product from melbourne is a program called prince
[4:53] <bslivka> Converts html/css to a pdf
[4:53] <bslivka> supports more CSS than any browser
[4:53] <bslivka> a lot of the print specific stuff
[4:53] <bslivka> paging and I think even a couple custom things
[4:54] <bslivka> one guy even published a book that he wrote as HTML and output from prince
[4:54] <philmaker> what time is it there? how much longer do you think you will be online?
[4:54] <bslivka> It's about 3:56pm
[4:55] <bslivka> It's about another hour til I get off work
[4:55] <philmaker> I've got to do some more tweaking to my Gobi but will probably come back in a couple of hours
[4:55] <philmaker> It's 11pm for me
[4:55] <philmaker> What do you do for work?
[4:55] <bslivka> right... and it's thursday there too huh
[4:55] <philmaker> I am currently not doing sw work atm
[4:56] <bslivka> It's friday, and late spring. everything is backwards and forwards
[4:56] <philmaker> currently doing some support related work for Fedex
[4:56] <philmaker> and playing with Helma and ExtJS on my off time.
[4:56] <bslivka> I work for the biggest and oldest art gallery in australia
[4:56] <bslivka> It's pretty flippin cool
[4:56] <philmaker> yes - thursday - bleech
[4:56] <philmaker> neato
[4:58] <bslivka> hrmn I think it works!
[4:59] <bslivka> Temporal databases yeah!
[4:59] <bslivka> Got me helma based temporal database working
[5:02] <philmaker> somebody open a bottle a wine!
[5:04] <bslivka> hrmn maybe not quite...
[5:07] <philmaker> This looks like a neat article: http://bustingseams.blogspot.com/2007/04/programming-language.html
[5:07] <philmaker> but I am kind of too tired to read
[5:08] <philmaker> I am a big usability advocate: I use Macs, have worked with them, I do UI work - but I also really appreciate the usability of languages
[5:09] <philmaker> Glancing at the intro to this = funny http://bustingseams.blogspot.com/2007/04/am-i-web-20-now.html
[5:10] <philmaker> "I'm deeply sorry" - no worries mate
[5:10] <philmaker> I like your blog and will try to read it more later - it's looks pretty smart to me.
[5:11] <bslivka> Ah you're the first person who has complimented it
[5:11] <bslivka> everyone else just tells me they don't understand any of it
[5:13] <philmaker> I am a creative and I like your blog
[5:13] <philmaker> OK - I'm going back to Gobi Gobi Gobi
[5:14] <bslivka> okay!
